Study Skills 7-8 (Math)
Math Study Skills is an elective course. It is an additional period of math designed to support the math student in their regular math class and overall math skills. In addition, many past concepts and skills are discussed and the student is given the opportunity for mastery by the creation of re-teaching moments by the instructor. Providing students with additional time and teacher instruction is the objective. This is attained by the absence of additional homework in this class, but allows time for students to work on and gain clarity on the homework that has been assigned in their general education math class. This support class provides time and resources needed for students that meet the criteria (low grades/test scores and/or teacher/parent/student recommendation). Students will enter and exit the program based on their progress. The time frame for enrollment in Study Skills will vary, based on the individual student’s performance. Effort in improving both academically and behaviorally (citizenship) is another piece to assigning the final grade for this course. Emphasis is also placed on organizational skills and focus is given on improving the overall approach the student takes in being a successful scholarly student. Study Skills (Math) follows the Middle Level AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) approach.
