Standley Middle School Physical Education Policies and Activities

The Standley Middle School Physical Education program is designed to maximize active participation during class time in order to promote skills, fitness, and enjoyment. Instruction (and practice are offered in many activities which are appropriate for sixth through eighth grade students. During the fall semester, students experience a series of three-week units which include the most popular and beneficial sports and games. During the spring semester, students go through a series of fitness tests which are developed by the state of California. This fitness testing is followed by our signature unit, Track and Field. The program also makes a serious and sustained effort to help students attain life skills and/or social skills such as responsibility and conflict resolution.
Sixth to Eighth Grade Physical Education
All sixth grade students will experience their first year of daily physical education exclusive of other grade levels. However, seventh and eighth grade students are sometimes combined. When possible, seventh and eighth grade physical education classes will remain separate.
Adapted Physical Education (APE)
Adapted Physical Education (APE) is offered. Individuals are eligible for APE if they first are identified as having one or more of the 13 handicapping conditions as identified by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Adapted Physical Education is a diversified program of developmental activities that are modified to meet the district’s physical education standards.
