Zamorano Fine Arts Elementary Magnet: Mosaic

One of the primary functions of art is to enhance one’s everyday environment. A unique project at Zamorano Fine Arts Magnet is not only enhancing the campus environment, it is also a powerful collaboration among Zamorano students, staff and the community.

At the start of this school year, the school’s art studio team, which helps develop the public art projects on the campus, brought together students, teachers and others to help identify a project. They chose to create a mosaic, an ancient form of art that produces very vibrant and permanent images. The mosaic symbolizes the growth and evolution of the students at Zamorano with the elements necessary for flowers to grow and bloom.

While a work still in progress, all 62 classes at Zamorano – more than 1,400 students – have helped create the mosaic. Thousands of tiles have been glazed and glued to the wall in a collaborative project involving students, staff and families.

Zamorano Fine Arts Elementary Magnet is a diverse visual arts magnet, striving for mastery in teaching and learning for the success of all learners. The school, located on the southern edge of the district, opened in September 1986, and was designated a California Distinguished School in 1993.
