CAHSEE Udate

Dear Principals and CAHSEE Site Test Coordinators:

As a result of the latest Budget Act, commencing with the 2009-10 school year, an eligible student with a disability who has an IEP or Section 504 Plan is not required to pass the CAHSEE as a condition of receiving a high school diploma. This exemption shall last until the State Board of Education either implements an alternative means for students with disabilities to demonstrate achievement in the standards measured by the CAHSEE or determines that an alternative means assessment to the CAHSEE is not feasible. Please see the attached letter.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR SDUSD STUDENTS?
All students with disabilities who are not eligible to graduate in 2009-10 must take and pass the CAHSEE.
These students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors not on track for graduation) will continue taking the CAHSEE until we receive additional guidance/information from the state.  Only students with disabilities who are ON TRACK for graduation in 2009-10 will not be required to take and pass the CAHSEE.

Any students with disabilities who were in the class of 2009 (5th year seniors) and have met ALL graduation requirements except for passing the CAHSEE, can receive a 2009-10 diploma.

We will keep you apprised of additional information we receive from the California Department of Education regarding the CAHSEE.  In the meantime, if you have questions regarding the current exemption for students with disabilities please contact me at egordon@sandi.net or (619) 725-5687.

Thank you.
