All Day Absences

When a student is absent from school, the parent/guardian should contact the Attendance Office between the hours of 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. each day of absence. The phone number is (858) 578-1400. Parents must inform the Attendance Office, in advance, of any out-of-town trips or personal absences.

Contract of Independent Study (CIS)

If a student will be gone for 5 days or more, a Contract of Independent Study can be arranged to credit the student for missed classroom time. Teachers must have at least 5 school days notice to prepare the assignments. It will be the student’s responsibility to pick up the assignments from the teachers before he/she leaves on a contract. The student is required to turn in the work to each teacher the day the student returns. If the work is not returned the first day back, he/she may not receive credit for the contract.

Tardies Excused/Unexcused

If a student arrives on campus after the school day begins, he/she must sign-in at the attendance office to get a pass to class. Tardies over 30 minutes must be cleared by a parent/guardian. Excused tardies include medical/dental appointment, funeral service, court, and religious holiday/ceremony. Oversleeping, car trouble, missing the bus, car pools, etc., are not excused tardies.

Blue Slips (Request to leave school grounds during the day)

If a student needs to be excused for a medical or personal appointment, the parent/guardian should call the Attendance Office ahead of time (if possible) or send a note with the student stating the reason and time the student is to be released. Parents should pick their student up in the Attendance Office, where they must sign out before leaving school grounds. Students are not to leave school grounds without first getting a blue slip. Any student leaving the campus without a blue slip will be considered truant.

Absences: Excused/Unexcused

Excused: Absence of the student due to illness, medical/dental appointment, funeral service, court, or religious holiday/ceremony.
Unexcused: Absence of the student due to oversleeping, car trouble, traffic, missing the bus, etc. are not excused.

Truant: Absence for reasons which are neither approved by parents nor acceptable to the school.

Suspension: Absence for disciplinary reasons by the school.
