Prerequisite: Fill out an application form. (Application forms are available in the counseling office or from Mrs. Garrett in room 108). Students who apply must have maintained an 3.5 grade average and/or 3.0 citizenship average. The class has a limit of 20 seats.
Course description: This is a leadership class in which the students will learn to organize, plan and create events for Wangenheim Middle School. Students work as a team and use the voting process for all decision making. The class is run by the students for the students with elected officials. Mrs. Kruger is a guide in the process of teaching these students about being responsible leaders for their school.
Special activities/projects: We plan many major fundraisers, school dances, sell items at the student store, make and sell the holiday grams, approve all club fundraising activities through meeting with official representatives (elected president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer), coordinate all Friday activities and spirit days. These are the majority of our activities however, each year brings new students and new ideas so we are always adding to the list.
Parent volunteers: Parent volunteers are always welcome especially at our dances and after school activities like open house and the carnival.
Donations: Donations are appreciated. However, we will post any specific items that we may need via our web page. |

Beginning Band

Grades: 6, 7 and 8
Prerequisite: An interest in learning to play a wind or percussion instrument
Course description: Beginning Band will teach students the basics in wind or percussion instrument playing. Music theory and some history will also be learned. By the end of the year students will be prepared to join an upper level school band.
Course description: This course teaches the basics in wind and percussion playing. The group will perform on campus during the year.
Special activities/projects: Beginning band performs in two concerts throughout the school year.
Parent volunteers: Classroom volunteers are not necessary, but parents are welcome to help during school concerts. ALL family members and friends are invited and strongly encouraged to attend school performances.
Donations: The beginning band is always accepting donations in various forms (monetary, music, instruments, supplies, etc...)
SPECIAL NOTE: The school has a limited supply of instruments that can be checked out for use by students at no cost (supplies for the instrument are paid for by the parent, though). Wind Ensemble students have the highest priority on instruments and Beginning Band the lowest.

Intermediate Band

Length of term: Year
Grades: 6, 7 and 8
Prerequisite: It is recommended that the student have at least one year of experience on his/her instrument prior to taking this course.
Course description: This course continues teaching the fundamentals learned either in Beginning Band or in Elementary School Band. Quite often this is the first experience students have in preparing for large-scale performances and festivals.
Special activities/projects: 2 - 3 concerts per year on campus and possibly one festival performance off-campus.
Parent volunteers: Parents who are skilled on a particular instrument are always welcome to help out with small groups or individuals. Everyone is encouraged to attend our concerts throughout the year.

Advanced Band

Band Tour to San Francisco
All-City Honor Band concert

Grade level: 7 and 8
Prerequisite: Have completed either Beginning or Intermediate Band as a 6th grader or audition into the class with the teacher.
Course description: Advanced Band is a performance-based class. It performs on campus in concerts and participates in off-campus festivals. The class sometimes joins the Wind Ensemble on tours.
Parent volunteers: Parents who are skilled on a particular instrument are always welcome to help out with small groups or individuals. Everyone is encouraged to attend our concerts throughout the year.

Broadcasting

Grade level: 7 and 8
Prerequisite: Must apply and be accepted.
Course description: What gives television its unique power? How does it grab our attention and then inform, persuade, and/or entertain us? How do we learn to be better consumers of television? This course will guide students to the answers of these questions and more. Students will study the development of television, learn extensive production vocabulary, evaluate programs for their communication value, and explore the use of television to convey a message. Students will produce school broadcasts and other programs (commercials, music videos, mini-movies) and master the delivery and the production of these to make efforts look and sound professional.
Media Productions will be run as a "production-based" course. This means that classical instruction (i.e. classroom lectures) is less emphasized than hands-on experience. Assessments and goals are reached by the completion of assigned broadcasts and video projects in a timely and professional manner.

Choir

Prerequisite: Just have a love for music and singing!
Course description: Choir is a performance based class. Students will learn the basics of vocal production while singing songs of various styles and genres. Students will also learn basic music theory and about all of the elements which help to express emotion in music.
Special activities/projects: Students perform concerts on and off campus. They also may participate in adjudicated festivals. This year the choir will join the wind ensemble in attending a festival in Colorado.
Parent volunteers: Parent volunteers are always welcome in chaperoning field trips and helping in fundraising. Volunteers are also needed during concerts on campus. ALL family members and friends are invited and strongly encouraged to attend school performances.

iVie Awards

Course description: Students are taught how to use basic computer programs. They learn how to word process and use a spreadsheet and database. In addition, they learn how to use presentation programs such as Power Point or other slide shows.

Advanced Drama

Prerequisite: This is a performance based class. We put on a fall play and a spring musical. Make sure you have time available for rehearsals and are willing to participate in fund raising.
Course description: This class focuses on acting, improvisation, audition techniques, monologues, and scenework.
Special activities/projects: Play performances
Parent volunteers: Parent help is greatly appreciated! We always need help putting on our productions. Assitance needed ranges from painting sets to donating food to sell at intermission.
Donations: The cost of the class is $20.00 per student. This fee covers some of the cost of production. Donations are accepted at any time.

Course description: In the age of technology, keyboarding is an important skill both for school and for almost any career a person chooses. In this 6 or 9 week class, students are introduced to the basics of keyboarding and work through a computer program which takes them step by step through the levels of keyboarding. Students who are already more advanced in keyboarding can work at a higher level and refine their skills. This class is run on computers so students will also learn basic computer skills. |

Course description: 6th grade music is available through the wheel class. It is an exploratory course which touches on three basic areas of music: history, theory, and appreciation. Students will learn about famous composers and their works, how to read notes and count rhythms, and to talk about music using musical terms. Students will also participate in a piano and singing unit. Any student interested in the music wheel should see Mrs. Southworth.

Special activities/projects: The class will perform in at least two school concerts and may participate in other district-wide functions.

Metalshop: Students learn basic metalshop safety by producing metal projects. Students start with sheet metal and band steel fabrication. Next is foundry, sand casting aluminum patterns. Last is OxyAcetylene welding. Students are working hands on in a true workshop format.
