Principal Grano

The Wildcat Way

Here at Wangenheim, all the staff and students live by The Wildcat Way. The ten pillars of The Wildcat Way are:

Courtesy
Respect
Initiative
Self-Discipline
Commitment
Appreciation
Responsibility
Honesty

and Cooperation

which all lead to Success

All Wangenheim students are expected to live by The Wildcat Way. Students who follow The Wildcat Way may be recognized with a Wildcat Card. Each month the five students who exemplify The Wildcat Way will be chosen as Wildcats of the Month. In addition, all students have the opportunity to earn a prestigious Leadership, Character and Service Award (LCS).

History of Wangenheim

Wangenheim Junior High opened in 1977 with the seventh grade meeting in bungalows. In 1978 the first permanent buildings were opened and Wangenheim became a grade 7-9 school the following year. In September of 1993 we became Wangenheim Middle School and now teach sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.

Julius F. Wangenheim, for whom our school is named, was a civic leader, patron of the arts, developer of Balboa Park , a scientist, and leading businessman and financier of San Diego . San Diego 's Central Library houses Mr. Wangenheim's personal collection of rare books in The Wangenheim Room. He died in 1942 at the age of 75.

Counseling and Guidance

Each student has a counselor who will help and advise him/her with school or personal problems.

You must have a pass to see your counselor during school hours. To see your counselor, fill out a "Request to See Counselor” form before or after school.

When called in by your counselor, sign in at the counter.

Visitors

Parents are welcome at all times but, like all visitors, must sign in at the Main Office and state their purpose. Parents must arrange in advance with individual teachers for classroom visits. Students not enrolled at Wangenheim are not allowed on campus at any time unless accompanied by a parent.

Absence Procedure

All absences must be verified by a parent or guardian through personal contact, note, or telephone call. If a parent/guardian has not contacted the school within five days of the absence, the school will consider the student's absence to be unexcused.

Doctor appointments, early dismissal :

Parents must request a student's early dismissal

from the Attendance Office . A parent may call or send a note in advance to request a blue slip, which will have the student ready to leave campus when the parent arrives.

Out-of-town Trips Lasting 5 Days or Longer : A parent or guardian must notify the Attendance Office -- not the teacher -- for a Contract of Independent Study, at least five school days in advance. This will give you credit for missed classroom time.
