WELCOME TO WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY. I BELIEVE YOU, THE PARENTS AND COMMUNITY, WILL MAKE THIS A GREAT SCHOOL!
Private and charter schools are thriving, indicating that parents want a choice of educational programs for their children. But in order for our nation to have a strong democracy, we must keep our children in public schools and hold our public schools accountable for providing the kind of education our children will need for this new, rapidly changing century. We want our schools to respond to our community’s needs and our families’ needs. That is why your involvement is crucial for the success of Washington Elementary. Here’s how Washington Elementary is moving forward to make our students exceptional citizens:
Committed Staff: Our teachers have spent many hours over the summer planning and meeting with community partners in an attempt to meet our public’s expectations.
Strong Community: As part of the unique community of Little Italy, we will develop more links with community activities, local businesses and after-school programs that will provide the entire community with opportunities to enroll and participate.
Physically Fit: We have received a $20,000 grant from the San Diego Chargers to enhance our P.E. Program. Every child will receive 60 additional weekly minutes of instruction in physical education by a certificated teacher.
GATE/Seminar Cluster Programs: We offer outstanding Gifted and Talented Seminar/Cluster Classes in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.
Music Programs: We offer all 5th graders instruction in General Music by our Visual and Performing Arts Department.
Technology Center: Children in grades K-5 receive approximately 50 minutes of hands-on instruction per week in the Media/Technology center. They engage in a variety of activities designed to address California State standards in technology and media.
Grading Accountability: San Diego Unified School District offers the new Standards Based Report Cards. With this new system, you will be able to understand where your child’s academic performance lies amongst the grading standards of other students in the state.
ELD: We’re introducing English Language Development (ELD) for our English Learners from 8:30 – 9:00 daily in addition to enrichment classes for students not enrolled in ELD.
At Washington, we focus on character development: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, Citizenship and Honesty/Trustworthiness. I believe that these skills are essential for our children to successfully pursue educational and learning opportunities, attain and keep employment and earn the respect of their peers, parents, teachers and eventually their supervisors or for themselves. These skills are essential for navigating in a perpetually changing modern world that requires flexibility and the strength of character that build relationships at a global level.
We need your support to become the school you want us to become for your children. Please join me to meet make our children, our school and our community the best it can be.
